The outcome
Why it matters
A self-assessment that flatters a provider fails twice: once with inspectors, and once in the improvement it prevents. Inspectors test whether you know your own weaknesses — an honest SAR, backed by evidence, is the strongest position a governing body can take into any inspection.
Improvement plans earn their keep when they are time-bound, owned by named people and genuinely monitored. A QIP that lists aspirations reads well in the SAR and changes nothing in the classroom.
Independent challenge is uncomfortable and worthwhile in equal measure. The providers who get the most from this work are the ones who would rather hear the truth early than discover it in a report.
